Downtown Washington, DC. The blizzard dropped about 6.9 inches of snow, which shut the city down. After living in Maine for 10 years, this was quite surprising—6 inches of snow in Maine is pretty normal and has little effect on people’s lives. Click on the image for a larger view.

Many of the animals were indoors because of the whether in DC–it is cooler than their natural climate, although the giant panda do enjoy snow days. This is the male, Tian Tian. Two Americas
Washington is not surprisingly a political place. The holiday season had its share of protests. The first is a voting rights demonstration outside the White House, the second was a white supremacist rally on the National Mall, ending at the Capitol Building.
