Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is found on trees throughout the South. While called a moss, it is actually a flowering plant. It used to be used commercially in the early 20th century as padding in car seats. Click on the image for a larger view.

Alien Landscape, Part 1
The Florida landscape is really alien to me. Shooting it in natural light has been a challenge because I don’t understand this land. Shooting in infrared seem to make a little more sense about how I feel. Click on the image for a larger view.
Islands of Light, Islands of Life
In visible light, seaweed is dark, like the rock it inhabits. But in the near infrared, seaweed appears white. Water absorbs that same infrared, making the rocks and islands above its surface glow. Click on the image for a larger view.

Pioneers
We have a line our young beach and birch trees that are pioneering our field. When we first moved to Maine, our field had been kept cut. We stopped that practice. One benefit was the blackberry briers that sprouted. The other was to watch the forest reclaim the land. This image was taken in the near infrared, which gives the foliage its radiant appearance.
