We had a taste of summer this week. The air was filled with heat, light, and fragrance. We took Hikari, our Newfoundland dog, down to the Kennebec river. Click on the image for a larger view.

A Door in Belfast
Belfast, Maine is one of those places that people drive past as they head north or south on Route 1 along the coast. But Belfast is a great little town with wonderful historic architecture and a vibrant downtown. It is an eclectic mix of a traditional New England town and a bohemian enclave. Well worth a visit. Passing Time, Part 4
Spring Floods
From Tuesday to Wednesday last week, a huge storm passed through Maine. With the snow melt and the saturated ground, water has few places to go. Hallowell, a small town on the Kennebec River, was one of the places effected. For three consecutive evenings from the river cresting on Wednesday, I photographed the receding water. During the summer, the wharf at the edge of the river is eight to ten feet above the water. Click on the image for a larger view.
Our Newfoundland Hikari
Hikari is our Newfoundland dog. She is only a 100lb/45kg—small for a Newfie. Her name Hikari (光) is the Japanese word for sunshine or light.
We are strict with our animals. Absolutely no dogs on the furniture. Except for the couch. And the bed. She has discovered that if she looks us in the eye and tilts her head to one side, she is more likely to get a treat. Newfoundlands are easily trained, almost as easy as their owners.
Newfies make great companions. Hikari is our second dog. Kai was our first. We rescued both of them. Newfies are not without their downside—drool on the kitchen ceiling is hard to clean and, if we could learn to spin their fur, we could have a second income. Click on the image for a larger view.
Summer Pines
Fall Visitor
We were blessed with another Deer Mouse this week. This time of year they seem to move into the house in preparation for winter. We encourage them to live somewhere else (we provide transportation at no charge). However, we are not sure our relocation program is successful—are we just catching the dumb ones, leaving the smart ones to breed?
Traveling the Maine Byways
Maine is certainly home to some spectacular vistas from the Appalachian mountains to the Gulf of Maine. But it is the small places that populate the State that holds Maine’s real charm. Getting off those large numbered roads gives passing glances into a myriad of landscapes. Those small, unknown byways always lead somewhere.
Early Fall Foliage
Early fall is one of my favorite times in Maine. Apple season is just starting and late tomatoes are still being harvested. But the real magic is in the forests. While the deep ambers and reds of late fall are spectacular, the electric yellows and gold against the remaining green is just so vibrant, so full of life.
A note about my photography. I come from a documentary background that photographs without cropping, creating the final image in the camera. The photographs here represent what the camera saw. Except from some simple work on image contrast, nothing was added or changed digitally later. Click on the images for a larger view.
